For Alexander McQueen Fall 2020, Sarah Burton Looked to Wales
Inspired by a 19th-century Welsh quilt that took 10 years to make, Alexander McQueen designer Sarah Burton raided her archive for wool-flannel scraps, which she then upcycled into the patchwork suits, blanket coats, and A-line skirts that anchored her fall 2020 collection. The quilt aesthetic also extended onto elegantly draped leather dresses and trenches, with blocks of plum and crimson set into sheets of soft black. Another Welsh motif referenced: traditional wooden love spoons, the intricate carvings of which appeared as striking lace that peeked out from below hems and made up sweet, thigh-grazing frocks. Hip flasks dangled from leather belt-harnesses worn over blazers, adding an outdoorsy touch to otherwise businesslike looks. Burton’s silhouettes manage to feel both restrained and slightly eccentric, in that particularly British way—covered up, but never too serious.
