The Stars from the 2016 Cannes Film Festival

Ryan Gosling

George Miller’s career-revitalizing juggernaut Mad Max: Fury Road was first unleashed on the world during its Cannes Film Festival premiere last year — and this year, Miller returns to the festival in a different capacity, helming the jury and judging slate of films that were announced Thursday morning. It’s a reunion, of sorts, for all the actors, directors, and writers who have graced the pages of W over the years; the varied bunch of films on the program run the gamut from a Spielbergian retelling of Roald Dahl’s The BFG to Nicolas Winding Refn’s neon-glazed postmodernism, spanning languages and international borders (films hail from the United States and France, of course, but also South Korea, Cambodia, the U.K., and Denmark). The list includes, but isn’t limited to, names like Marion Cotillard, Charlize Theron, Parker Posey, and Adam Driver — all now fixtures of the festival circuit, the biggest names in the business for arguably the biggest festival of the season. Until the stars descend on the French riviera in less than a month, here’s a look back at the Cannes Film Festival 2016 competitors and participants from the W archives.
