Before launching Vetements in 2014, the 34-year-old designer worked on the Louis Vuitton and Maison Martin Margiela design teams.
He and his fellow designers maintained anonymity when the label first launched, but they still spoke out about their process. “If there’s one word that’s taboo for us,” one of the Vetements collaborators told W in August 2014, “It’s ‘sophistication.’”
He’s known for deconstruction. “By making the sleeves look like they’re falling off, or the shoulders like they’re slouching, you create a nonchalance,” Gvasalia told W earlier this year. “The construction dictates the attitude.”
