What Heartbreak Looks Like on the Faces of Keira Knightley, Nina Dobrev, Tessa Thompson, and More Actresses
Between Julianne Moore, Tatiana Maslany, Danielle Brooks, and Patricia Clarkson, there are two Golden Globes, two Emmys, one Grammy, and one Oscar. But not even these accomplished stars of screen and song can just channel that desperate feeling when a relationship has ended at the drop of, well, a photographer’s shutter. For their new book The Endings: Photographic Stories of Love, Loss, Heartbreak, and Beginning Again, out Tuesday from Chronicle Books, the art director Jessica Ennis and the photographer Caitlin Cronenberg (the daughter of the filmmaker David Cronenberg), took the time to develop real character and backstory for the aforementioned actors—as well as the likes of Tessa Thompson, Keira Knightley, Nina Dobrev, and 21 other stars—in order to put that sense of loss and remembering toward Cronenberg’s camera. Naturally, the authors also used their own failed relationships to inform the pictures, as do the actors their own. As much as this book is about endings, of course, it’s about beginnings—and maybe not even new ones. You know how it goes: As soon as you start thinking about the beginnings of something, it means the end is near.
