Moschino Fall 2020: Backstage With Gigi Hadid and Her Disposable Camera
Just like the scene in the 2006 Sofia Coppola film Marie Antoinette, where the title character (Kirsten Dunst) and the women in her court are shopping for silks and eating baked goods, the most sumptuous part of Jeremy Scott’s fall 2020 Moschino show featured the Bow Wow Wow hit “I Want Candy.” The tune blasted during the finale, when Joan Smalls vamped it up on the runway wearing a literal cake. You guessed it: the French Revolution and Marie Antoinette’s decadent taste influenced Moschino’s looks for this presentation, but with an ’80s twist. Embroidered denim dresses with hoop-skirt widths were slashed into minis; Bella Hadid wore a cropped leather jacket along with a chain that read “Moschino” draped around her middle. To go along with their sky-high hairdos, the models wore superstacked heels—in Kaia Gerber’s case, proportions went over her knees. Before Scott walked the runway at the very end (on his left arm, a cast and a hot pink sling), a bride closed out the heavy-on-the-confection show—a trend we’ve been seeing at all the Fashion Weeks, and a nod to Karl Lagerfeld.
