Rodarte Fall 2020: Behind the Scenes at the NYFW Show
Inspired by Eiko Ishioka’s costumes in the 1992 Francis Ford Coppola film Bram Stoker’s Dracula, the Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy presented a fall collection that was both sweetly romantic and a little witchy. The show was on February 11 at St. Bartholomew’s Church, lending a hushed and ceremonious aura to the proceedings: Before the lights dimmed and models began walking through an array of candlelit greenery, attendees kept their voices to a whisper, taking in the Byzantine revival space and the incense-tinged air. Bella Hadid opened the show in a belted 1940s-style polkadot dress, a silhouette we would see rendered in sparkling houndstooth and ruffled silk. And there was plenty of the opulent theatricality that the Mulleavy sisters are known for: bejeweled spider webs tied with corset strings across the back, boas made of fresh orchids, sequined hooded cloaks, skirts and sleeves covered in dangly pearl beads that swished and clacked as models walked. More unexpected were a set of seven painted silk gowns with the relaxed cut and feel of a 1960s vacation dress and flowing caped backs. The final dress, with a pale blue train that seemed to take up half of the aisle, was more than fit for the setting—it wouldn’t have been surprising if a booming voice had commanded us all to “please stand.”
