Anti-Armory: Scenes from Spring/Break

The entrance to the landmark post office near Penn Station is playing double duty this week, granting entry to 70 rooms, lobbies, stairwells, closets, and even bathrooms upstairs – otherwise known as the spaces that host this year’s Spring/Break. Now in its fifth year, the sprawling New York fair hosts a mix of solo and group shows from both emerging and mid-career artists, peppered with more established names like the photographer Maripol. It may be one of over a dozen mega-shows happening this Armory Week, but founders Ambre Kelly and Andrew Gori have figured out how to set theirs apart: Spring/Break is “curator-driven,” so all 800-plus artists on display were chosen by a group of 120 applicants that Kelly and Gori hand-selected from an international open call. (If that sounds unorthodox, bear in mind that the two got married at last year’s opening press day.) This year's works all adhere loosely to a “⌘COPY⌘PASTE” theme, and are up until Monday.
