Thom Browne’s Catholic School Goes to the Circus at PFW
On a rainy Sunday in Paris, Thom Browne brought a wintry landscape of snow and bare trees to his runway show. In a presentation that was one part theater, one part fashion, models wore giraffe, horse, and elephant heads in Browne’s signature palette of red, white, blue, and black. The hybrid creatures walked through doors that harkened to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe imagery, and which were stationed down the runway. They opened them for each other, playing with one another, while the French romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns’s The Carnival of Animals twinkled over the speakers. Afterward, human models with their regular heads walked down the runway in sets of two. The collection took Browne’s trademark school uniform aesthetic and added to it flourishes: ribbons, patches, layers of down, floppy masks that covered half the models’s faces.
