The Surreal World

MoMA highlights early works by Magritte.

MoMA’s “Magritte: The Mystery of the Ordinary,” on view on September 28 (through January 12, 2014), takes a fresh look at early works by the Belgian surrealist master René Magritte. From aberrant, dreamlike figurations and quotidian objects rendered absurd to visual conundrums—lovers kissing through gauzy masks, an eye filled with a cumulous sky, and that treacherous pipe that claims not to be—the exhibition features more than 80 paintings, collages, and objects made between 1926 and 1938. Prepare to be perplexed.
