Samantha Shannon was still an Oxford University undergraduate when she signed a seven-book deal with Bloomsbury for a fantasy series about a clairvoyant teenage heroine in a futuristic London underworld. The next J.K. Rowling? Her first installment, The Bone Season, is out August 20—and the film rights have already been sold. Another dark thriller reportedly on its way to the big screen is Marisha Pessl’s much anticipated novel Night Film (Random House, August 20), which follows her buzzy 2006 debut, Special Topics in Calamity Physics. A shrewdly contemporary whodunit, it chronicles the murder of a reclusive cult-horror filmmaker’s daughter.
