What if mornings weren’t solely about productivity, but about pleasure? The modern routine tends to prioritize purpose: optimizing, organizing, moving forward. But there’s a quiet luxury in beginning the day with something simpler, something joyful.

Fragrance offers exactly that. A few spritzes can transform the atmosphere instantly, releasing a carefully composed blend of notes and accords designed to spark a subtle rush of feel-good chemistry. Call it a sensory shortcut to happiness: perfume as a small but potent morning indulgence.

If you’re looking for such sunshine in a bottle, you’ll find it in the new addition to Parfums de Marly’s feminine collection. Athénaïs, aptly divinely named after Greek goddess Athena, is a radiant signature scent.

A study in contrasts, Athénaïs has a sparkly opening with the effervescent top notes of neroli, bergamot and yuzu. It starts with a fizzy, yet complex top of petal and citrus. To ground that fresh floral-citrus brightness comes in the deep hum of vanilla and tonka beans, providing a warm intensity that lingers for hours. And at the heart lies the alchemy between two of perfumer’s most prized white florals: orange blossom and jasmine sambac. Their voluptuous, generous aura lends a sexy playfulness to the whole enterprise.

The neroli in Athénaïs has a rich origin story: fresh bitter orange blossoms are handpicked at dawn in the springtime in Tunisia and Morocco, to best capture its most fleeting facets. The flowers are transformed by hydro-distillation into the luminous floral, citrusy scent perfume lovers recognize as neroli. The tonka, too, has a story. Two facets of this delectable ingredient are in the juice. A resinoid form keeps us closest to the raw ingredient, with a deep, woody scent profile. Tonka absolute, in contrast, is a lighter cousin, with vanilla-flecked almondine notes. Together, the deep and the airy when paired together give a faceted idea of the raw bean, showing the various dimensions of one material.

The inspiration for Athénaïs, as well, was exceptionally well-rounded. Athénaïs de Montespan, a French noblewoman of many talents, was a fixture in the court of Louis XIV. By most accounts she was the most beloved and celebrated muse of the king, as well as a patron of the arts, and a renowned wit with a majestic aura. Parfums de Marly, grounded in the mystique, opulence and unsurpassed beauty of the French royal court in the 18th century, was inspired by the way that Athénaïs de Montespan served as a blueprint for an entire generation of influential women of the time.

Despite coming from inspiration that historic, Athénaïs feels anything but archival. It’s a strictly modern-day scent, and its light and shadows reflect 21st century sensibilities in the push and pull and contrasts between the fresher, more vibrant facets and the deeper, resinous ones.

Capturing some of the radiance on the outside is the flirty vessel. Parfums de Marly’s iconic flacon has been dressed in a vibrant orange hue, with those unmistakable tassels sashaying around in a most playful coral tone. Like the juice, it is sheer joy, a burst of energetic, juicy pleasure that settles into a complex hum on the skin. Joy, it turns out, can be that easy.
