Everything To Know About The 2023 Golden Globes

After speculation whether they would ever return live on air, the 80th Annual Golden Globes Awards are officially back, with nominations for the annual awards ceremony announced on Monday, December 12th.

The evening, put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association since 1944, traditionally recognizes excellence in both American and international film and television. NBC will broadcast the ceremony on January 10th, after declining to do so last year following a series of controversies regarding the HFPA’s practices. The Golden Globes will telecast live on NBC on January 10, 2023 at 8pm EST.

Who is hosting the Golden Globes?

This year, stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the Golden Globes. Earlier this year, Carmichael came out as gay via his critically acclaimed HBO stand-up special Rothaniel. He also starred on NBC’s The Carmichael Show from 2015 to 2017.

It’s a clear message from the HFPA. that the Golden Globes is trying to rebrand as a forward-thinking, essential evening in Hollywood awards viewing.

What was the Golden Globes controversy?

In May of 2021, Amazon Studios and Netflix announced that they were (at least temporarily) cutting ties with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Golden Globes, after it faced heavy criticism for both the lack of Black representation among its members and ethics breaches, revealed by investigations by both the Los Angeles Times and the New York Times. NBC followed suit, saying it wouldn’t telecast the 79th Golden Globes until the HFPA made reforms.

The HFPA released a plan for reform, and on October 1st it released a list of 21 new members it had recruited. The 2022 ceremony for the Golden Globes went ahead untelevised. After announcing further changes and restructuring of the organization, NBC announced in September of 2022 that it would air 80th Golden Globe Awards in January of 2023.

“Our studio partners have worked with us to ensure the kinds of changes were made to reimagine the HFPA and Golden Globes and preserve our future to ensure our philanthropy and charitable activities continue to grow strongly, and we remain the leading awards program to kick off the award season on a strong note that benefits the entire Hollywood community,” HFPA president Helen Hoehne told Deadline. “We recognize we have a special responsibility to set the tone and tenor for each season and look forward to embracing that challenge with Hollywood’s party of the year.”

Who is presenting at the Golden Globes?

The first round of presenters for the 80th Golden Globes were announced on Tuesday, January 3rd and include Ana de Armas, Ana Gasteyer, Billy Porter, Colman Domingo, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Natasha Lyonne, Nicole Beyer, Niecy Nash-Betts, Quentin Tarantino and Tracy Morgan.

The second group was announced on Monday, January 9th and includes: Claire Danes, Cole Hauser, Jennifer Hudson, Harvey Guillén, Henry Golding, Hilary Swank, Glen Powell, Jay Ellis, Jenna Ortega, Jennifer Coolidge, Letitia Wright, Mo Brings Plenty, Regina Hall and Salma Hayek Pinault.

Ukraine’s President Zelensky will also be participating, offering a message of peace which will be introduced by Sean Penn.
