Met Gala

Rihanna, Tracee Ellis Ross and Everyone Who Actually Wore Comme des Garcons to the 2017 Met Gala

No matter the theme, each year celebrity attendees struggle to adhere to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala prompt. Last year, the theme was "Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology," which you'd think would be pretty straightforward. And yet! And yet... But this year posed even more of a challenge with the exhibit being "Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between." Most interpreted this as an opportunity to either wear red, or go a little avant-garde. Others, like Kim Kardashian, went in the opposite direction, and stunned with their simplicity. The most obvious choice, however, would be to splurge on some actual Comme des Garçons. But less than ten major celebrities took the plunge! Of course, Rihanna did everyone a favor by wearing the biggest and brightest piece she could find (from the exhibition, no less). Plus, risk-takers like Pharrell Williams and his wife Helen Lasichanh, Tracee Ellis Ross, and even Caroline Kennedy stepped up to the plate. For this, we thank them.
