New York Dolls
In a 1969 cover story shot by Vernon Merritt III, Life magazine lauded “That Young New York Look”—a mix of “long hair, long legs” and “a long cool stare.” It “might not always be elegant,” the editors noted, “but it is completely alive.” In fact, it is still kicking. On the fall runways of Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton, the street-savvy ’60s aesthetic was marked by short skirts and a youthful swagger, but this time around it takes on a more sophisticated air: Waists are cinched; wide-brimmed hats have been added. It’s the new New York look, if you will, and it’s the most happening thing in fashion right now.
