Bottega Veneta Fall 2020: No Over-the-Top Glitz, Just Fashion
When Daniel Lee was brought on to helm the Italian brand Bottega Veneta in June 2018, he was expected to bring the label back to life, so to speak; Bottega had suffered three years of declining sales prior to Lee’s appointment. The Central Saint Martins grad, who cut his teeth at Maison Margiela and Balenciaga, was a Hail Mary pass—and he delivered, creating Bottega Veneta’s (and its parent company, Kering’s,) best-selling bag of all time, the Pouch. The fashion media sang his praises, releasing profiles on the quiet young man, and glowing reviews from his first runway show in Milan in February 2019. Fall 2020 would be the perfect time for Lee to really wow the crowds—perhaps with a musical performance, à la Tommy Hilfiger, or a star-studded, larger-than-life runway, like Jeremy Scott for Moschino. Instead, the Bottega Veneta designer let the fashion do the talking. He showed Western-tinged, square-toe boots and ’90s-influenced minimal suiting, plus sequined dresses, structured coats, and purses dripping in superlong fringe. Even without a grandeur performance, these clothes were killer enough to create a show.
