Ciao, Italo Zucchelli: Master of Menwear at Calvin Klein
On Tuesday morning, Calvin Klein stunned the fashion establishment by announcing news that had been rumored for some time: all its brands are to be unified under the supervision of a single creative vision, to be revealed at a later date. Out the door with womenswear designer Francisco Costa is Italo Zucchelli, who in his 12 years as creative director became a force to be reckoned with in menswear. Zucchelli, who designed for six seasons under Klein himself after a stint at Jil Sander, trained as an architect and brought to the label an eye for structure and material. Often, he incorporated new and untraditional materials into his collections, even the foam from a bicycle seat one season. More importantly for a label like Klein, where marketing is paramount, Zucchelli deserves credit for keeping it ahead of the curve with its unparalleled casting – a Calvin exclusive could instantly make a career – and by extending its reach into the world of music, dressing the likes of Drake, whom he outfitted for his 2014 tour. Here, 20 of Zucchelli’s most memorable looks over the years.
