On Monday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will honor a living fashion designer for only the second time in history. She is Rei Kawakubo, the pioneering designer who founded Comme des Garçons in 1969 and has come to be known for her uncompromising vision. Though CDG may seem avant-garde on the runway, the men and women who worship at the shrine of Kawakubo have found myriad ways to be playful, inventive and colorful in wearing her designs with remarkable flair on the streets of the world. From New York to Paris to Tokyo, you can spot this tribe of iconoclasts strutting in their finest Comme des Garçon, and fashion is all the better for it. Here, we asked some of our best contributing photographers to share their best pictures capturing CDG in the wild.
