El Museo’s Brush with the Occult

In anticipation of its upcoming May event, honoring Narciso Rodriguez and Yaz Hernandez, the junior committee of El Museo’s 2012 Gala hosted a private viewing of Hernan Bas’ show “Occult Contemporary,” currently on display at the Lehmann Maupin gallery. The exhibit comprises Detroit-based artist Bas’ painterly response to the mass incorporation of the supernatural and occult into young adult and children’s books, movies and TV programs (“Vampire Diaries” fans, you know who you are). Rodriguez, Hernandez and a bevy of young, colorfully dressed guests sipped cocktails as they perused the works. If the devil is indeed in the details, both Bas and the crowd had things covered.
