Even Giambattista Valli Is About Athluxury Now
With last season’s Fenty x Puma by Rihanna show, singer-turned-designer Robyn Rihanna Fenty started something. Her Spring 2017 collection, purportedly inspired by a vision of Marie Antoinette, led us to declare that the future of athleisure was athluxury, and that idea—a seamless blend of high and low—was echoed with Monday’s Giambattista Valli show. (Rihanna herself has moved on; for Fall 2017, she hit the library stacks instead of the treadmill.) The designer, known for his ethereal, romantic minidresses and florals, showed a series of his trademark lace confections in addition to several entirely new ensembles: very Giamba flouncy black tops layered over pairs of Nike running tights, complete with swoosh. Valli isn’t giving up pure luxury any time soon, but he’s found room for a streetwear edge among his offerings.
