The Rothschilds
In the former studio of John Singer Sargent, Sir Evelyn and Lady de Rothschild have built their London “love nest”—a house stocked with artworks old and new.
The dining room, with a Waldo Story sculpture in the foreground and Josef Albers’s Homage to the Square (1966) above the fireplace.
The breakfast room, with a Rodin on a pedestal.
Barbara Hepworth’s Pierced Form (Toledo) (1957).
The Rothschilds commissioned this Bill Viola piece, Divine Light (2006), which hangs above a Louis XVI commode. Based on Wagner’s opera Tristan and Isolde, the video is a slow-motion underwater scene depicting Isolde reuniting with her lover in death.
