Eye Candy

The French street artist JR, best known for wheat-pasting enormous pictures around the world, has lately been working with the dancers of the New York City Ballet to create huge installations and images that can now be seen inside and outside the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center. Most striking is the 6,500-square-foot vinyl image that covers the capacious promenade. JR maneuvered the company’s 80 dancers into assorted shapes and patterns on crumpled white paper to create an enormous eye, with the dancers appearing nearly life size. The works are part of the New York City Ballet’s 2014 Art Series, which aims to draw the art world to dance. What it’s already done is draw holders of the most expensive seats up to the balcony in the fourth ring—where they’re rewarded with the best view in the house of JR’s choreography.
