Istanbul’s Treasures
W’s Fashion Market and Accessories Director, Karla Martinez de Salas, is on the hunt for what’s next.

Right before the fall collections in Paris, I took a trip to Istanbul. I had been there before but never in winter, and the city felt damp and solemn—straight out of an Orhan Pamuk novel. Serra Turker, a native who designs the accessories line Misela, took me to an emporium called A La Turca House. The converted four-story townhouse is a treasure trove of furniture and objets from all over the world. Among my favorites were the vibrant vintage rugs. I was reminded of those rugs a few days later as I watched all the dark romantic florals go down the runway at Givenchy; that autumn-garden look also emerged at Roberto Cavalli, Giambattista Valli, Vera Wang, Saint Laurent, and Carolina Herrera. I find something quite beautiful in that melancholy mood.
