Mary Tyler Moore Always Made a Splash in the Glitziest Dresses and Matching Accessories

From Mary Tyler Moore’s early appearances as Dick Van Dyke’s wife on The Dick Van Dyke Show and her lead role as a Minneapolis journalist in The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970 to her later film dramas, the actress enchanted audiences on screen and off with her offbeat style, wide grin, and, of course, her love of dogs. On the red carpet and at any of the innumerable charity galas she attended — she was International Chairwoman of the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and active with the ASPCA — Moore always made a statement in bold colors and even bolder brooches (a jewel-encrusted dragonfly made repeat appearances throughout the ’90s). And on screen, her character in The Mary Tyler Moore Show tread new ground for a woman in the workplace; Mary Richards, as she was known, embraced the tide of second-wave feminism with her sartorial choices, alternating between jumpsuits, sweet dresses, and the hallmark of the ’70s, the turtleneck. As her career progressed, Tyler never lost her eye for splashy colors and classic glamour. The actress died Wednesday at age 80, and we pay her homage with a look back at her best looks from 1965 to the 2000s, here.
