Beginning at 6 p.m. sharp on the first Monday in May, fashion designers and their celebrity arm candy hit the red carpet for the annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “Rei Kawakubo / Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” was this year’s exhibit, offering an avant-garde challenge to designers and A-listers alike. The museum show itself was organized by the designer’s dramatic juxtapositions, including fashion/anti-fashion, high/low, and good taste/bad taste, which could also perhaps be used to describe how the theme was interpreted by guests. The night’s co-chairs, Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen played it safe, while singer Katy Perry arrived in a dramatic, custom Maison Margiela gown, complete with a bridal veil. The color red was everywhere, however the brand Comme des Garçons was not. Pharrell Williams’s wife, Helen Lasichanh, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Rick Owens’ wife, Michèle Lamy, were some of the few who dared to wear the brand of honor. Here, find every last look to walk down the red carpet throughout the night.
