Walking through the various art fairs open in New York this week, mirrors showed up time and time again. At Spring/Break, Graham Caldwell made a large-scale sculpture with numerous reflective surfaces. Meanwhile at The Armory Show, Anish Kapoor (who designed the famous – and well-photographed – public art piece The Bean in Chicago), created a small, smooth sphere. It’s hard, if not impossible, to resist whipping out your iPhone to snap your likeness – an interesting, ahem, reflection of our time. Are we, as viewers, artwork unto ourselves or simply endlessly narcissistic? In any case, there’s certainly something to be said for the art of the selfie.
