Yesterday, it was announced that Penelope Cruz will be taking on the role of Donatella Versace in an upcoming season of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story, which will center around the murder of Donatella’s brother, Gianni. The news comes after months of speculation that noted Versace BFF Lady Gaga would be stepping into the role, though both the pop star and Murphy himself denied the rumors. It’s not hard to see Gaga as Donatella (the long blonde hair certainly helps) but Cruz? Then again, Murphy has never been one for typecasting. Just ask Sarah Paulson, who, under Murphy’s guidance, has starred as everyone from a two-headed woman to real-life prosecutor Marcia Clark. And though Cruz may not be a Donatella doppelgänger at first glance, she already has the fashion down. Over the years, the actress has donned numerous Versace gowns on the red carpet, including the 2007 Academy Awards. In honor of her new role, here’s a look back at all of her best Versace moments, from sleek leather to sequined gowns. And as for the hair? Well, there are wigs for that.
