American artist Robert Crumb, usually simply called R. Crumb, is known for his satirical illustrations and comics. In this work commissioned for W, Crumb offers his take on the history of women, from zaftig cave dwellers to Playboy Playmates. Crumb draws from life, photographs, his imagination and memory; the schoolgirls depicted here were taken from his high school yearbook. The subject of the award-winning 1994 documentary Crumb, he lives with his wife in the South of France, where he has spent the past five years completing an illustrated version of the Book of Genesis. An exhibit of the work, “The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis,” debuts at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles in late October.
