Spring Breakers

Raymond Pettibon Surfer

Astride giant swells or a still ocean, it’s a welcome break from this eternal winter to visit the shore with two new exhibitions. At Venus Over Manhattan, the SoCal artist Raymond Pettibon’s 40 works devoted to surfing bear the comic-book strokes of his mythopoetic style. And while Oregon-based Dan Attoe’s depictions of frolickers in the water, on view at Peres Projects in Berlin, aren’t as action-packed, they are no less monumental in tone.

“Dan Attoe: Landscapes With Water” is on view through April 19 at Berlins Peres Projects, Karl-Marx-Allee 82. “Are Your Motives Pure? Raymond Pettibon Surfers 1987-2012” runs from April 3 to May 17 at New York’s Venus Over Manhattan, 980 Madison Ave.
