Greta Gerwig‘s pained love letter to her hometown in the early aughts still feels like a reliable document of what it is to be young in Sacramento today—otherwise, would the California capital’s subreddit be so protective of this movie? We hit the streets of downtown Sacramento—which has, like most everywhere else, been subject to the transformation of gentrification—to meet the lady birds of today. And we wouldn’t dare ask which side of the tracks they come from.
