Exclusive: See Tim Walker’s Fleshy, NSFW First Attempt at Photographing Male Nudes
“I just wanted Tim to do something he hadn’t done before,” David Bailey said from his studio in London of how the back of his new guest-edited issue of the biannual Humanity ended up filled with so much flesh—including plenty of full-frontal male nudity—courtesy of Tim Walker. The images are, to say the least, not Walker’s usual work—he’s made a name for himself with fantasy-filled, inventive editorials for magazines like W that have shown Kristen McMenamy transformed into a mermaid, and a painted Tilda Swinton exploring the jungles of Mexico—but Bailey, being the mischief-maker that he is, decided to put Walker to a challenge. And, coming from the legend who’s photographed so many celebrities that he once turned down photographing Picasso, and whose close friends include Kate Moss and London’s mayor Sadiq Khan, Walker, of course, had to accept. “Never done male nudes before… Bloody hard!” Walker wrote to introduce the editorial, which ended up mirroring the Francis Bacon-like style of Bailey’s daughter Paloma’s paintings that appear at the beginning of the issue, too.
