Family Outing

Alison Bechdel’s critically acclaimed memoir Fun Home hits Broadway.

“Dad and I both grew up in the same small Pennsylvania town,” Alison Bechdel writes in her 2006 comic-book memoir Fun Home. “And he was gay, and I was gay, and he killed himself, and I became a lesbian cartoonist.” When her searing exploration of sexual orientation and family was adapted into a musical at Manhattan’s Public Theater in 2013, it won nearly every critical award. Now the team behind that production—director Sam Gold, composer Jeanine Tesori, writer Lisa Kron, and actor Michael Cerveris—is bringing it to Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre, starting April 19 (just in time for Tony season). Expect heartbreak, and brace yourself for honesty.
