It’s not for nothing that preparing for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has garnered a reputation as something like training for the Olympics. Just to get cast in the first place, models undergo a grueling training regimen to get fit and slim — and even after they’re cast, there’s a full slate of fittings and preparations at the brand’s New York offices. Among the Angels spotted around New York following the casting announcement, there’s been Sara Sampaio, Cindy Bruna, Alessandra Ambrosio, Josephine Skriver, and now, Gigi Hadid. The 21-year-old model is no stranger to the Victoria’s Secret catwalk, but this year, she’ll appear alongside sister Bella, who will walk for the first time. Hadid won a coveted spot on the Victoria’s Secret runway, and to cap it off, she’s winning at street style, too, bringing a strong, elegant edge to the monochrome uniform that New Yorkers wear so proudly.
Who: Gigi Hadid.
When: Wednesday, November 2.
Where: Out and about after fittings for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York, New York.
What: A black long-sleeved top and tulip-hem skirt by Brandon Maxwell withsilver lace-up booties.
Why: Model-off-duty style was once synonymous with chambray shirts, slouchy boyfriend jeans, and street shoes, but girls like Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and Josephine Skriver have consistently elevated their looks. Here, Hadid rocks coordinating separates by designer-of-the-moment (and Lady Gaga stylist) Brandon Maxwell. Though, at first glance, it’s a simple look — black long-sleeved top, black skirt — it’s the details that really make it. Strong, pointed shoulders and a tulip-hemmed, layered skirt present an architectural silhouette, while classic silver lace-up booties are a little edgy and a little witchy. (Furthermore, the whole ensemble proves how versatile Maxwell can be.) Next month, the Victoria’s Secret Angels will land in Paris, but for now, Hadid is going full-on New Yorker in her personal style.
