Who in the world could possibly replace Kate Spade at Kate Spade? That was Spade parent Liz Claiborne Inc.’s dilemma when the designer left in July. The company found a solution in October, naming Deborah Lloyd, Banana Republic’s design czar, as copresident and creative director of the label. It was an unexpected choice, since the house of Kate Spade was built on bags, and Lloyd’s background is mainly in clothing. But her mandate is to add flavor to the accessories and bring in clothing and jewelry. “It’s a magical brand,” Lloyd told Women’s Wear Daily, W’s sister publication.
