When Adèle Jancovici, the publisher and founder of Le Livre Art Publishing, approached her old friend and confidante, the French photographer Maripol, about publishing her personal collection of Polaroids, the artist was understandably hesitant. “These were images that I had never intended on sharing,” says Maripol, who was a prominent fixture on New York’s art and fashion circuit in the 70s, shooting Grace Jones, Naomi Campbell, and Madonna. “I just considered these pictures as a way to document my life in New York.” Now, the private stash—which even includes a few nude self-portraits—is being made public in the form of “Maripola X,” a limited-edition book. “Our life was a simple one,” explains Maripol, referring to her whirlwind romance with photographer Edo Bertoglio, who is also featured in the collection. “Like everything we did it was an artistic endeavor, so we were always taking pictures.”

“Maripola X” will be released February 7th with a signing at the New York Bookmarc store, 400 Bleeker Street, New York, 10014.
