Two Artists Got Miley Cyrus to Ride a Cat

In honor of the MTV VMA Awards.

In honor of the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards, artists Pamela Reed and Matthew Rader, best known for their psychedelic 3D video art, made three shorts featuring Miley Cyrus. Here, Reed opens up about how she got Miley to ride a rendering of her cat Shanti, what it takes to create these fantastical worlds, and more.

How did you get involved with this project? It was a perfect fit. We do really wild, funny videos, and that’s pretty much exactly who Miley is. It was a dream job because we pretty much got to shoot whatever we wanted and she was really into all the ideas.

How did you arrive at doing a 3D rendering of Miley’s cat, Shanti? We took some photos of her cat on set and then we collaborated with a 3D modeler to get the exact face of the cat and its paws and fur. It was really important to Miley that the cat look like her cat, which is so cute. We love cats. We have five of our own and we’ve had it on our dream list for the past eight years for a model to ride a cat.

Was the cat down? Oh my god, yes. The cat is this little four-pound fluff ball. It pretty much just sits there and chills.

What were the inspirations for the worlds you created? It was just a world from our minds that we dreamed up. “The Never Ending Story,” was also a big inspiration for the cat itself. I think if we had time, we could have built a real, giant cat that she could have ridden on set. What better place to ride a cat than in the sky with a rainbow?

What was it like working with Miley? She arrived on set and immediately hugged us. She’s outgoing and we pretty much just told her to ride this cat and cheered her on.

You don’t have to be great at Photoshop, just good enough to lasso-tool some lips and pasties.

Speaking of pasties, invest in LOTS of them. Since they’re mostly disposable, you’ll want them in every shape, size, and color.
