PETA is pressuring Britain’s Ministry of Defense to ditch the shiny black bear fur used for the Queen’s Guards’ helmets and has approached Stella McCartney and Vivienne Westwood to design animal-friendly replacements. “There’s nothing regal or royal about killing bears for their skins,” says Robbie LeBlanc, director of PETA Europe. The MoD, meanwhile, says it’s not opposed to using synthetic materials and will hold a meeting later this year to discuss the subject. McCartney has offered to help source faux fur, and Westwood is still mulling over how she might take part.
