Selena Gomez Is Carefree and Drama-Free in Los Angeles

The actress and pop star steps out in Coach amid tabloid speculation about her relationship with The Weeknd.

Selena Gomez retreated from the spotlight for much of 2016 — she went on a three-month Instagram hiatus, despite still being the most-followed person on the social media platform, only returning at the end of the year with a post thanking her fans. She took a break from touring, too, to focus on her health both mental and physical. She returned to the public eye, and to public gossip, last week with quite the statement when she was spotted with Bella Hadid’s ex-boyfriend, musician The Weeknd, in the most romantic of places: behind a dumpster. Since then, the rumor mill has churned out endless speculation on the relationship between Hadid, The Weeknd, and Gomez, who’s close friends with Hadid’s sister Gigi. But for an outing in Los Angeles this week, the pop star appeared solo, casual, and carefree (thus drama-free?) in a weekend-ready ensemble — a cute Coach sweater, rough-washed denim, and a few playful accessories. Understated, yet polished. She’s not letting the tabloids get her down.

Who: Selena Gomez.

When: Thursday, January 19.

Where: Out and about in Los Angeles, California.

What: A royal blue sweater by Coach with its Rexy dinosaur logo across the front, a white turtleneck, cropped light-wash jeans with raw hems, Kurt Geiger suede heels in the faintest magenta, and pink reflective sunglasses.

Why: Armed with coffee, the best accessory, Selena Gomez looks all about chill out and about in Los Angeles. For Coach’s 75th anniversary, creative director Stuart Vevers rebranded the label as Coach 1941 and introduced a new mascot — the dinosaur Rexy, who has appeared on rings, keychains, jackets, and, of course, the ubiquitous cashmere sweater. He also recruited a new face of the brand — reports indicate Gomez signed a $10 million contract to rep Coach 1941. Thus, Coach merch. Paired with a white turtleneck and raw-hemmed jeans cropped at her ankles, she channels a vintage ’70s aesthetic, low-key and carefree. Her playful accessories — suede pumps, bright pink wire-framed sunglasses — and shaggy hair cut only underscore the casual vibe she does so well.
