Selena Gomez Embraces 24 Hours of Spring Before the Blizzard

Starting off fashion week on the right foot.

On the first day of New York Fashion Week’s Fall 2017 shows, a blizzard swept through New York City, complete with sub-zero temperatures and gusts of icy wind. The city drew to a halt; schools closed, fashion shows featured more front row-ers dressed in parkas than the season’s latest It trend. The transition to bona fide winter was particularly jarring considering what had come just the day before: an unseasonably humid, unseasonably temperate 24 hours, more late spring than deep winter. Not that anyone was complaining, least of all Selena Gomez. The actress ventured out into the cool afternoon air clad in a decidedly not-wintry Proenza Schouler design, sleeveless and calf-skimming and with daring cutouts down the center. She might as well embrace the warmth while she can.

Who: Selena Gomez.

When: Wednesday, February 8.

Where: Out and about in New York, New York.

What: A black and white geometric patterned dress with cutouts by Proenza Schouler from the Spring 2017 collection with black peep-toe sandals.

Why: The fall collections might be showing right now, but for a brief moment, it seemed spring was more appropriate. (If only the designers showing in-season, like Thakoon and Ralph Lauren, had been so lucky to show their collections Wednesday.) Gomez selected fashion-favorite Proenza Schouler for her Manhattan outing, pairing the simple, clean design with a pair of equally simple and clean black heels. The knotted front is a little rustic, while the cutouts are totally modern. On the runway, the dress showed with a pair of leopard-print mules; while leopard print is proving to be one of street style’s biggest trends this season, when it comes to adapting a look from runway to the streets, sometimes simpler is better. With a fresh face and simple, straight hair, Gomez promises to bring her fashion A-game this season.
