Sail Away

Its sail stitched together from paintings by 150 local schoolchildren, the Ship of Tolerance (above)—a 66-foot activist symbol dreamed up by the celebrated Russian artist duo Ilya and Emilia Kabakov—hits land on September 27 in New York, or, more precisely, Brooklyn’s waterfront during the DUMBO Arts Festival. The installation, which has docked in other port cities like Havana and Sharjah, in the United Arab Emirates, serves as a reminder that our attitudes toward others are formed at a tender age—fitting, as Ilya celebrates his 80th year with a major exhibition of the couple’s work at New York’s Pace Gallery November 2 through 21.
