Simone Rocha’s Next Step
Designer Simone Rocha, who launched her eponymous line during her senior year at Central Saint Martin’s College in 2010, is best known for transforming rich, textured fabrics into voluminously structured garments. So it was surprising to hear that her latest project was a denim collaboration. But her 14-piece collection for J. Brand manages to reflect her sensibility. “I really wanted to see how I could work with denim in a feminine way so it could have that movement but also hold its shape,” 26-year-old Rocha said when she presented the clothes at the Mercer Hotel in New York. A pegged-leg pair of jeans with a bold trim lining the back pockets, she said, is “tomboyish in front, but the ruffles in the back make it girly.” The bold color palette, as well, is signature Rocha. “We really loved the idea of youthfulness, this ‘girl gang’ type-of-thing,” she said, “so there were tons of school uniforms referenced, and a lot of pink and red.”
