THREE'S A TREND

Power Suits Are Trending, thanks to Brie Larson, Allison Williams, and Zoe Kravitz

Larson wore oversized Alexander McQueen, Williams did plaid Gabriela Hearst, and Kravitz went classic in Oscar de la Renta.

Suits of every shape and size stormed the Fall 2017 runways this season, from Stella McCartney’s take on equestrian attire to Jacquemus’s translation of the classic le smoking. And naturally, they’re slowly trickling on to the red carpet, too. This week, Brie Larson, Allison Williams, and Zoe Kravitz all wore suits, demonstrating three different ways to wear the look—day and night. Larson wore an oversized Alexander McQueen, Williams went plaid in Gabriela Hearst, and Kravitz opted for a classic black Oscar de la Renta tuxedo.

It’s shaping up to be the year of power dressing—a trend that began with Giorgio Armani and Donna Karan in the late 1970s and early ’80s, ending today with smart and sustainable suits for the modern working woman. And yes, that includes actresses.

Who: Brie Larson

When: Thursday, March 16th

Where: The premiere of Kong: Skull Island in Beijing, China.

What: The Oscar-winning actress wore an oversized gray double-breasted Alexander McQueen suit with ruffles cascading from its left pocket accented with a classic red lip.

Why: Larson has been on a red carpet role lately, starting with the Oscars and extended by her Kong premiere circuit. She’s really demonstrated her range, from edgy gowns that show some cleavage to bright and bold colors. This oversized suit proves that she’s a woman who can not only do both—but it all.

Who: Allison Williams

When: Thursday, March 16th

Where: The “Rising Star Reception” at the 2017 Sun Valley Film Festival.

What: The Get Out and Girls star wore a plaid Gabriela Hearst suit from the Fall 2017 collection paired with a simple white shirt and pointy pumps.

Why: Williams really shines when it comes to ladylike looks, so this casual suit was a nice departure. A New York designer, Hearst is the master of mixing sophisticated business-wear with urban functionality, plus the plaid allows this look to hit two trends with one stone.

Who: Zoe Kravitz

When: Wednesday, March 15th

Where: The Whitney Biennial VIP Opening Night gala.

What: The Big Little Lies actress wore a classic black Oscar de la Renta suit with a cropped jacket and shimmering gold top.

Why: For their first collection for Oscar de la Renta, designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia brought a bit of their Monse red carpet sensibility to the label, mixing de la Renta’s classic cuts with a casual, a New York working girl vibe. Kravitz oozes cool in whatever she’s wearing, but this look is a nice step up for a formal night at the museum.
