How much does Cynthia Rowley love the beach? So much so that she teamed up with surf brand Roxy to launch a whole collection around it. The Cynthia Rowley for Roxy swimwear, shoes and beach items hit Barneys and other stores earlier this month. Read on for Rowley’s favorite pieces, and how she prefers to spend her summer in and out of the city.
What do you love to do during hot days in New York? I know it sounds crazy but I have a swimming pool in my backyard and I swim in the morning with the kids, before work. The birds are chirping, and there’s an opera singer living somewhere in the neighborhood and we hear her practicing. The whole thing is kind of surreal.
What’s your favorite summer look? I have a ratty old pair of cut-off jeans from my husband. They’re only out of circulation when in the laundry.
Any dress slightly below the knee, with cotton anklets and chunky shoes. Also, this little ostrich feather skirt that can be worn with T-shirts or something more fancy.
We did these cute sandals for our Roxy collection that are inexpensive—all under $100—but really well made. I like to wear the platforms with little ankle socks. For a bag, I’m sure I’ll try to sneak one of our puffy fall handbags out of the showroom.
Are there any beauty products that you can’t live without during the heat? My hair gets frazzled going in and out of the pool and the ocean, and the only thing that keeps it tame is Redken Water Wax. I literally can’t leave the house without some in my hair. And MAC Splashproof mascara and an elastic hair band that goes around my whole head. We made neoprene headbands for Roxy that hold your hair back in or out of the water.
Where are you off to this summer? I always do a lot of traveling in April and May for work—this year it’s Paris, Tokyo, Sydney and Milan. Then when the weather starts to get really nice in New York, I just want to be at the beach every weekend with all my friends.
