The Jetsetter’s Guide to Summer: Vacation Like Tanya Taylor

Just back from Capri and Cuba, the globetrotting New York-based designer shares all the expert tips she’s picked up while on the road—or should we say water? When in doubt, always travel by vintage speedboat, says Taylor.

Designer Tanya Taylor’s most recent travels include Capri, a go-to destination for the jetset crowd, for her friend Giovanna Battaglia’s big Italian wedding extravaganza. That’s about as chic as it gets, but it doesn’t mean she’s above taking advantage of great airplane handouts. “I learned from my mom to steal most of what is given to me on planes,” said Taylor. “I have a drawer of navy Air France First pajamas at home and so does she. Sometimes we wear them together and feel wonderful.” Here, Taylor talks more about best airplane freebies you should definitely snag, travel mistakes to avoid (no Chanel next to your liquids—ever), and things that always save when she’s on the go.

Favorite mode of travel? Vintage speedboat.

What’s your summer vacation destination? Last summer I went to Tanzania, Kenya, and Morocco. I just got back from Cuba and Capri—I love exploring in the summer and try to travel to new places.

Favorite off-season destination? The Hamptons, when it is not summer.

What’s your favorite hotel in the world? Sandy Lane in Barbados because I got married there and the beach is heavenly. Also, Four Seasons George V in Paris for its flowers and the little stool they bring so your purse has a place to sit, too!

Most luxurious hotel bathroom you’ve ever seen? The Upper House in Hong Kong—one of the chicest hotels with a massive corner bathtub looking over the city and harbour.

Go-to travel outfit: An oversized midi shirtdress, a cashmere sweater, small purse for passport and cash, and large tote for my computer and an absurd amount of magazines.

Best travel shoe? Common Projects sneakers loosely laced.

Dress up or be comfy for the flight? I love the tradition of getting dressed to travel, however, I would never wear a short skirt or heels. I’m all about understated, minimal and coordinated.

Best or worst person you have ever been seated next to on a plane? Best person was Nanette Lepore’s dad on a flight back from Barbados when I was thinking of starting my company—he helped me take the jump. Worst person was removed from the plane—enough said.

Best freebie you’ve stolen off a plane? I learned from my mom to steal most of what is given to me on planes—I have a drawer of navy Air France First pajamas at home and so does she. Sometimes we wear them together and feel wonderful.

Best beauty products for travel? Eos lip balm, La Mer eye cream and the refreshing cucumber mist face spray you can buy from the Express Spa at JFK.

Name five essential pieces of clothing/accessories you can’t travel without… Thierry Lasry sunglasses, Tanya Taylor dresses, Frends headphones, a pair of brightly colored heels and Charlotte Tilbury lipstick.

What’s a big packing mistake to avoid? Liquids in your suitcase right beside your favorite Chanel bag.

Best souvenir you have ever picked up on a trip? My engagement ring in Carmel.

Favorite airport lounge or restaurant? British Airways First lounge at Paris Charles de Gaulle.

Airline with the best or worst food? Singapore Airlines has the best food. They serve traditional Chinese meals and seasonal tea.

Name something that always saves you when you are traveling… Extra battery pack, copy of my passport, and a notebook with the addresses for where I am going.

Favorite piece of travel advice you have ever received? Make friends with locals.
