In recent years, Eighties fashion icon Norma Kamali has been keeping a low profile, running her New York boutique and collaborating with Everlast and the Spiegel catalog. But in February the designer inked a deal that may revive her household-name status. This fall she’ll debut an exclusive collection for the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart. The line will bring the quirky Kamali aesthetic to clothes, accessories and home goods—all at a mass-market price point. Kamali says she was particularly drawn to Wal-Mart’s broad reach. “I have an opportunity to…help women not just feel good, but also with their image and self-esteem,” she told WWD. Though the behemoth’s reach is broad, there’s still no Wal-Mart in Manhattan. To placate local fans, Kamali plans to stock the budget line at her boutique.
