They were made famous by Risky Business and The Blues Brothers, Bret Easton Ellis novels and Don Henley lyrics, but now the Wayfarer style is being made charitable by Westward Leaning’s new designs. The San Francisco-based duo of Robert Denning and Karlygash Burkibayeva created eight iterations of the iconic shape, each with a name, story, and unique material related to a key social issue; and ten dollars from each of the hand-made glasses is donated to a related charity.
The sliver of naturally-shed antler in the arm of the “Teddy Roosevelt” pair, for example, celebrates the President’s environmentalist leanings, and all proceeds go to the National Parks Conservation Association. There’s also the colorful “Castro” pair, which thankfully isn’t named for Fidel, but rather the address—525 Castro Street—of gay activist Harvey Milk’s camera shop in San Francisco. Proceeds go to GLSEN (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network).
Look out for the Color Revolution collection (launching May 1) with neon lenses in orange, blue, and pink.
The prices range from $165-$295 and are available at WestwardLeaning.com
