What An Intern Should Wear – The Girls

In honor of W’s two newest interns–Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf and Dan Humphrey–we asked Fashion Assistant Nora Milch to shed some light on the dos and don’ts of intern attire. I think all fashion interns should dress to express their own individual style. With that said, there are definitely some better wardrobe choices than others. The key is to look chic and professional, without sacrificing comfort. Here are a few tips to help you look your best at work in W‘s (or any) fashion closet:

1. Our fashion closet is always ice-cold so it’s important to wear layers. This cotton-twill peacoat is perfect for around the office.

There is nothing more important to any girl’s wardrobe than the perfect white button up blouse. This J. Crew shirt is a great choice. Can’t survive without some color? A fashion intern doesn’t sit in front of a computer all day, so jeans are a great option. They are comfortable and easy to move around in. Plus, if worn right, they are totally chic and professional. I live in jeans. My favorites are by Rag & Bone and J. Brand. So, what makes the perfect pair for the office? Here are some tips: Avoid rips and extreme fading and go with solid washes; opt for midrise — a slightly higher waistline gives a cleaner look; and pick a cigarette or skinny cut that hits right above the ankle. Interns are on their feet all day. Whether you’re running around NYC to pick up samples, or running around the fashion closet packing trunks for a big shoot, comfortable shoes are critical. Unfortunately sky-high heels don’t cut it. These Reed Krakoff oxfords are the perfect alternative. They’re as comfortable as flats, but give you a couple of extra inches of height. Finish off your look with a few extra accessories. I love these Eddie Borgo earrings. They are affordable and look great with everything. Also, a warm winter coat won’t cut it in NYC in February. Of course, there are a couple things you should avoid:

– First, you want to be professional, but make sure to dress your age. For example, leave the pantsuit you bought for college interviews at home.

– Always try to look your best, but 6-inch YSL tributes are a big mistake given the amount of time you’ll be running around the city.

– And finally, be comfortable, but no leggings or tights as pants please.
