Like Her Alexander McQueen Look, Zoe Saldana Is All About Women’s Strength
Saldana wears a fairytale McQueen Fall 2017 look for the latest screening of her new film, Guardians of the Galaxy 2.
The Guardians have arrived at last. On Wednesday evening in New York, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 cast members Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker, Chris Sullivan, and Zoe Saldana touched down to attend a screening of their new film in collaboration with the Cinema Society. Hosted in collaboration with Men’s Fitness, it was an evening populated by beefy men—Bautista is a former wrestler in The Rock mold—and movie stars as actors like Diane Kruger and Andrew Rannells made their way to midtown for an early look at the summer’s big blockbuster
Amid it all, actress Zoe Saldana—no less the action star with a long list of science fiction and Marvel credits to her name—had the style moment of the night in a knit Alexander McQueen dress, standing out among the predominantly male cast and wearing a more daring look than many of her selections for the press tour till now.
Zoe Saldana in Alexander McQueen at a screening of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 with the Cinema Society in New York, New York, May 2017.
Who: Zoe Saldana.
When: Wednesday, May 3.
Where: A screening of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 with the Cinema Society at the Whitby Hotel in New York, New York.
What: A black and gold knit Alexander McQueen dress from the Fall 2017 collection with black peep-toe shoes, styled with a messy, décontracté braid.
Why: Sarah Burton’s Fall 2017 collection for Alexander McQueen was rife with romantic, mystical imagery of the natural world, sewn together as always with a bit of a punk edge. Saldana’s look exemplifies that dynamic, combining featherlight gold knit sleeves with with a denser, black sweater bodice and skirt. It was a collection that highlighted women’s power—at the time, we described it as “more knight in shining armor than damsel in distress”—and, as a result, might have been a strategic choice for the actress. The rest of the Guardians cast might not be particularly known for their style prowess, but Saldana isn’t holding back—and she shows off her killer action-star abs in the process. It’s an edgier look than those she’s worn for previous red carpets, a welcome diversion, and perhaps a hint of even better things to come as the Guardians premiere approaches.
