Couture: Everything to Know About Angelina Jolie’s Parisian Fashion Drama

Angelina Jolie must have a thing for Paris. After starring in Pablo Larraín’s Maria as opera legend Maria Callas, she’ll return to the city for an upcoming project, Couture. Directed by Alice Winocour, the film is, as the name might suggest, a high fashion drama with a throughline close to Jolie’s heart.
From plot details to cast updates, here’s everything to know about Couture, below.
What is the plot of Couture?
According to Variety, Couture is set “in the frenzy of Fashion Week” and follows “three women [who] cross paths in Paris, grappling with the world’s tragedies and the questions of their lives: American film director Maxine Walker (Jolie), South Sudanese model Ada, and French makeup artist Angèle working in the shadows of the catwalks.”
“In the form of intertwining destinies, Couture examines the souls and wounds of women’s bodies,” the project’s official synopsis reads. Jolie’s Maxine is at the center of the film—she receives a breast cancer diagnosis while working at Paris Fashion Week.
The plot is personal for Jolie, as her mother Marcheline Bertrand died of ovarian and breast cancer in 2007. “I feel like it’s such a personal film,” Jolie said. “It felt so private that in my mind, it’s probably the one film that doesn’t feel like a film.”
Couture is Winocour’s first official English language directorial effort. It will be shot in English and French, similar to Winocour’s previous film, Proxima, which starred Eva Green and Sandra Hüller.
Is there a Couture trailer?
The first trailer for Couture was released on January 6 and opens with Jolie proposing the question, “Do you think we’re responsible for what happens to us?” Jolie’s character, the American filmmaker Maxine Walker, is commissioned with directing a project that will open Paris Fashion Week. “I feel very lucky,” she says in French. The trailer is focused on Jolie and her two subjects: a South Sudanese model named Ada and makeup artist Angèle, who both have their own struggles hidden beneath the ritz of the catwalk.
The trailer takes a turn after Jolie receives news that she has breast cancer. She’s forced to grapple with her diagnosis—“I don’t know how I’ll tell my daughter,” Jolie says at one point—as she aims to complete the PFW project and juggles emotional entanglements, like a romance with a handsome Frenchman, played by Louis Garrel.
Who is in the cast of Couture?
Jolie, who leads the film as a film director, will team up with the model Anyier Anei (in her feature film debut) and Swiss actor Ella Rumpf. French actor Louis Garrel, Garance Marillier, and Finnegan Oldfield round out the cast.
Of course, Jolie is no stranger to tapping into the fashion world with her acting roles. She played the supermodel Gia Carangi in the 1998 TV film Gia.
Does Couture have a release date?
Couture had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2025.
