While musicians, record label executives, celebrities and influencers made their way down the red carpet at the 62nd Grammy Awards on Sunday night at Staples Center, fans of a different sort crowded around the downtown Los Angeles stadium. On the heels of news that Kobe Bryant, L.A. Lakers legend, and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, had passed away in a helicopter crash earlier the same day, mourning Angelenos wore “24” and “8” jerseys—the two numbers Bryant claimed during his 20-year career—and left purple and yellow flowers around the coliseum. The mood on the carpet suffered a distinctly downward turn, reports from local entertainment journalists stated, when the news broke. But it wasn’t the only piece of tough news capping this year’s Grammys. Just days prior, the awards show’s new chief executive officer Deborah Dugan was ousted from her position—leading her to file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, with reports of racist and misogynistic behavior at the Recording Academy. Despite the fraught landscape upon which this year’s Grammys takes place, the stars still put on their best—including Lizzo, who was one of the first of the night to arrive, in a Versace dress and fur stole; Lil Nas X, also wearing Versace, (but his was hot pink), and Tyler the Creator, who served Tower of Terror meets Grand Budapest Hotel realness with his own take on a bellhop.
