Kate and Rooney Mara’s Black-and-White Style Streak Continues
These days, it takes a little extra effort to tell Kate and Rooney Mara apart. The sisters have been gracing every red carpet with a clear sartorial strategy: alternating black and white dressing. They touched down at the Toronto International Film Festival red carpet today with their latest exampe of not-quite-twinning method dressing.
The pair, who actually share a two year age gap, are adopting a stark, colorless palette in promotion of their upcoming film Bucking Fastard. At the Toronto premiere on Monday, they walked the red carpet in two looks that continued their fine-tuned tonal severity. Rooney wore a billowing white minidress from Sarah Burton’s Givenchy spring 2027 collection with a distinctly botanical finish, featuring lace floral details and gauzy sheer layers. Her ethereal lightness was offset by her sister standing by her side in a dark, lacy lingerie set by Dolce & Gabbana. The coordinating touches of romantic lace, paired with their matching slicked-back hair, exuded a sister connectivity that serves as the basis of their upcoming film.
Bucking Fastard, directed by Werner Herzog, finds Kate and Rooney playing sisters who speak at the same time, love the same man, and share the same dreams. Naturally, preparing for the roles meant achieving total synchronicity off-screen. Aside from red-carpet coordination, the duo told reporters at TIFF that, while filming, they also started dressing alike in everyday life and eating the same foods at the same time. The film’s title card shows the sisters clad in bridal garb against a dark, shadowy background, and it appears this eerie imagery serves as the inspiration for their recent outings.
The identity-obscuring method dressing kicked off at the Venice Film Festival last month, when they begun gracing red carpets in alternating black and white ensembles. First, slinky slip dresses and headscarves (Rooney in black; Kate in white). At the photocall, they switched gears with Rooney in a tiered white gown and Kate in a sheer black dress lined with white lace. For the premiere, they took the prompt to evening-wear heights with Kate in two-toned sequins and Rooney in a black frock with a bulbous bubble hem.
With each dramatic new look, they continue the world-building of Bucking Fastard and inch ever-closer to full-on sartorial telepathy. Needless to say, by the end of the press tour, they’ll certainly have more clothes to share.
